Cabinet has approved changes to the Adjusted Alert Level 1 Regulations, as South Africa has exited the fourth wave.
Due to the vaccination rate on the rise and the trajectory of the pandemic, the following changes have been made with immediate effect:
- Asymptomatic positive Covid-19 cases do not need to isolate;
- Symptomatic positive Covid-19 cases must isolate for 7 days (and not the 10 days as previously implemented); and
- Direct contacts to positive Covid-19 cases, do not need to isolate unless they develop symptoms.
The impetus behind the adjustments is because the percentage of immunity to Covid-19 has risen to 60 – 80%.
The new isolation provisions will prevent disruption in the education sector. A provision has also been made to remove the requirements for social distancing of 1 meter for learners.
All Covid-19 health and safety protocols are to remain in place.
